Public Works
The Public Works Department consists of Engineering, Traffic and Transportation, Development Engineering, Water, Waste, and Energy, PW Maintenance Services Yard, Geographical Information System, and the Salinas Municipal Airport.
Engineering and Traffic/Transportation Divisions
The Engineering and Traffic/Transportation Divisions provide management of the City's public infrastructure, plans and implements public capital improvements, examines private development plans and proposals with associated CEQA documents to ensure responsible growth as it relates to public infrastructure and transportation issues, administers programs, and enforces governmental regulations. The Engineering Division also manages the use and development of City properties and special projects.
Development Engineering Division
The Development Engineering Division is responsible for engineering reviews of private development plans/proposals as well Inspection services for new subdivisions and public improvements, and the issuance of permits for street vendors and encroachment into the public right-of-way.
Energy, Water, and Solid Waste Division
The Energy, Water, and Solid Waste Division is responsible for implementing the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Permit (NPDES), solid waste, water, and sustainable energy programs.
PW Maintenance Services Yard Division
The PW Maintenance Services Yard Division protects the health and safety of Salinas by providing maintenance services for all City infrastructure, vehicles and equipment, and also ensures NPDES compliance in the field.
Geographical Information System
The Geographical Information System (GIS) Division's primary function is to provide mapping and data analyses support to City Departments. Operations include develop databases, create maps and statistical data, develop internal and public interface for City information, and support City staff in GIS data and mapping needs.
Salinas Municipal Airport
The Salinas Municipal Airport is a general aviation facility occupying 763 acres, with two runways serving single and twin engine aircraft and helicopters, as well as an increasing number of turbo-propeller and turbine-powered business jets. The airport has an air traffic control tower in operation 12 hours/day, 7 days/week.

Bardin Road Safe Routes to School Paving

BARDIN ROAD SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL PROJECT
Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) paving will occur along Bardin Road between Williams Road and Sconberg Parkway between June and July 2022. Slurry Seal will occur along Alisal Road between Bardin Road and Tampa Street between July and August 2022. FDR is a multi-phase process; therefore, operations, cure times, and stages of construction for each travel lane will vary. Chip Seal Project Update

The City of Salinas has contracted with VSS International to for the Chip Seal Project at various locations throughout the City. Work is scheduled to begin Monday, May 16, 2022 and last approximately 4 weeks.
Construction hours will be from 9:00AM to 4:00PM, Monday through Friday . Although there are no anticipated road closures, traffic delays are likely. Please allow additional travel time or use alternate routes where possible. Roadway users, residents, and business are asked to please be mindful of all traffic control, “No Parking” signs, equipment, and construction personnel.

FEMA Updates Flood Maps

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has delivered preliminary flood maps for parts of Monterey County. The maps identify revised flood hazards along the Salinas River, Gonzales Slough, Natividad Creek and unnamed tributaries. Before the new Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) become effective, there is a 90-day appeal period from May 12 to August 10, 2022. During that time, public agencies, residents or businesses with supporting technical and scientific information, such as detailed hydraulic or hydrologic data, can appeal the flood risk information on the preliminary maps, which can be viewed at fema.gov/preliminaryfloodhazarddata...
$4.1 Million Encampment Resolution Grant

The California Interagency Council on Homelessness (Cal ICH) issued a Notice of Intent to Award $4,079,416 in Encampment Resolution Funding (ERF) to the City of Salinas. This grant will support Health & Safety Day projects (services and clean-up efforts at encampment sites) along the mile-long stretch of land from Natividad Creek Park to Main Street, which intersects with Laurel Drive, Carr Lake, and Sherwood Drive.
